Across generations, many of the original Palestinian names were replaced, altered or erased through colonisation.
Yet these names continue to live in the memories, language and history of the people who have always belonged to this land.
This map was carefully illustrated using the historic Arabic names of towns, villages and landscapes as they have been known for centuries.
A tribute to cultural memory, identity and belonging, and to the enduring connection of the Palestinian people to their homeland in the face of ongoing occupation, colonisation and genocide.
Every city, every olive tree, every shoreline and every symbol has been drawn with intention—to honour a living heritage and preserve the names that have endured despite repeated attempts to erase them.
May this piece encourage curiosity, remembrance and conversation,
and serve as a reminder.
Falastin is the first in an ongoing series of illustrated maps exploring places around the world through their pre-colonial names and histories. Each piece seeks to preserve cultural memory, honour indigenous identities and encourage a deeper understanding of the lands, languages and stories that existed long before borders were redrawn and names were changed.
This essential ANZ accessory complements any outfit. It can be worn many ways - around your neck, as a top, at the waist or as a headscarf!
